This domain is the fediverse side of douce scroll, a language-learning feed built to replace the doomscroll. It holds our identity on the open social web, and it is the address our reader answers to.
The app itself lives at douce.live. It is kept on a separate domain deliberately — see below.
Our identity here
Our account on the fediverse is @douce@douce.social. The software holding it runs on a subdomain; this apex answers WebFinger so the short handle is the canonical one. Until the account is live, that address will not resolve — we would rather publish nothing than publish a handle that silently fails to federate.
We do not host accounts for anyone else, and we have no plans to. If you learn with douce scroll, your account is with the app, not with an instance we run.
Why a second domain
Blocks on the fediverse are made per domain. If an instance ever decides it wants nothing to do with us, we would rather that decision cost us reach here than take down the domain carrying our privacy policy, our imprint and our content-report form. Those live at douce.live and stay reachable no matter what anyone thinks of our reader.
It is also easier to reason about. One name, one thing: everything we do that touches the open social web identifies itself as douce.social — the account, the reader's user-agent, and the address to write to.
For instance administrators
douce scroll reads public posts from a small number of Mastodon and Lemmy instances, pulls out words and expressions worth learning, and shows learners the post with a link back to the original. We try to be a guest worth having: modest request rates, an honest user-agent, no accounts, no scraping behind logins, and a way to be removed that takes one email.
